Gorditas Los Metates Reviews

You don't go to a restaurant like this for the ambiance. Well, because there isn't much of it. As a matter of fact the place is as about as plain as plain gets. They moved from Homan Avenue to Calumet Avenue, in the old KFC location right off the Calumet Avenue exit from the toll road. Well then, why should you stop by this place? Quite simply, because of the food. The nice women that cook here do everything from scratch. They make gorditas, corn tortillas, and large flour tortillas for burritos. Yes that's right, they don't buy these items, then fill them. Absolutely not, they make everything from scratch! The family that owns this restaurant is very nice. As a matter of fact, stepping into their old restaurant on Homan Avenue used to feel as if you just stepped into your aunt's (if you had an aunt that was Mexican) house for lunch or dinner. Everything about this place is simple. Even the menu has a small amount of choices to select from. The reason for this is, everything that is on the menu, they do very well. Don't come here expecting fast service because all items are made to order. If you want your order expedited then call ahead so that you don't have to wait once you arrive.

You want authentic? Doesn't get any better than this. I've had the gorditas and the quesadillas, both are exceptional and handmade, you can sit at the counter and watch how they make them as well. You will not be disappointed, this is my kind of hole in the wall joint.

These are by far the best gorditas I have ever had , they taste authentic just like visiting Mexico ! The gorditas here are slim but crunchy just like they sell on the street in Mexico. This place is really dives but by far one of the best gorditas anywhere hands down . If you crave mexican in Indiana this is the place for you . I recommend the carne asada gorditas and tacos ! A must

One word: EXCELLENT. I went on a whim after church looking for a decent taco. What I found was a homemade steak taco on homemade tortillas with homemade Verde and red salsas. I will be back.

My boyfriend raved about how good the food was here so he brought me here last weekend and now we're back again! The gorditas were so good!!! :) only bad thing is it's cash only. So make sure u bring cash!

We just found this place across the street from the South Shore station in Hammond and I can't wait to go back. We called every Mexican restaurant here on Yelp in the area (about 50 total) and this was the only place that actually makes fresh, homemade tortillas. There is another restaurant next door claiming to have the best tacos in town, but an older lady coming out of Gorditas Los Metates told us that the other place isn't good and Los Metates is much better. I knew this was the place for me when I walked in and saw an old lady mixing the dough for the tortillas by hand. It was just like all of the murals you see painted on the walls of other restaurants claiming to be authentic. Then the wonderful aroma of fresh menudo hit me and I stood in the doorway drooling. The food is great and authentic. They have large menu board on the wall with your traditional ways to prepare your food such as with carne asada or chorizo and egg, but they also have machacado or chicharrones. The make fresh menudo every Saturday and Sunday morning. The food was so good that my wife placed another order to go so we could have it again for dinner. If you're still not sold on this place... they have bendy straws!!
